It would be misleading to say that all soft skills are equally important. In fact, the type of soft skills a salesman requires would be different from those required by the Founder of an Educational Institute. So, Soft Skills training needs would differ for person to person, depending on the nature of your job and how it can enhance your productivity.

How does one, however, decide which type of soft skills to work on or Simply his Soft Skills training need? Here are a few ways of finding out.

Identify the skills your employees lack

If you want to develop your team’s potential as a manager, you’ll have to first identify the skills they lack.

Similarly, when it comes to expanding your team’s abilities in terms of communication, teamwork, adaptability, conflict resolution, etc., you’ll have to conduct a behavioral assessment. During interviews, it’s called behavioral interview.

Questions that are used during a behavioral assessment are quite different from a traditional form of questioning.

For example, you may ask each team member individually a question like – “How is work these days?” Your team member may give you a vague reply or may simply be direct and address their grievances. If you ask them about where they think they can improve, they may take longer to answer.

To effectively measure their soft skills quotient, you need to ask situational questions.

For example, “How much time do you think you should invest in pitching the client?” In this form of a question, there is a higher chance that your team member will reply with a situational example or more. This is because they are bound to use reference answers extracted from their own work experiences. This is how, as a manager, you will be able to identify whether their process of working is right, wrong, or somewhere in the middle.

Similarly, other types of behavioural interview or assessment questions include:

  • Tell me about the time you had an argument with a fellow colleague. How long did it take to get resolved or did it get resolved?
  • There must have been situations where you had to address an irate client? Can you tell me about that client and how you responded?
  • Have you ever experienced the time when you had to deliver work at the last moment? How did it make you feel and deal with it?

This will help you identify the type of soft skill training meaning critical observation, communication, problem-resolving, and other types of skill gaps they will need to fill.

Your team will always require soft skill training

This is because certain types work situations are uniquely different with unforeseen challenges. Some projects have witnessed an unexpected turn of events that create stress in the team. These types of not-so-pleasant situations will determine your team member’s efficacy and commitment to work.
